I WORK MY WAY THROUGH THE ZOMBIES on the Strip and head for the street I spotted. Vivianâs at my back, holdinâ onto my shirt like Iâm a life preserver. Every sound outta her mouth makes the muscles in my body tighten. I gotta get her outta here. No matter what.
The stink is awful. There ainât even an ounce of clean air, and every breath hurts as rot fills my lungs. Vivian gags behind me, and even I donât got an iron stomach. When a zombie comes within inches of my face, I heave, and the taste of puke fills my mouth.
Iâm sweatinâ by the time we get to the other side, but somehow we make it. There ainât a chance to celebrate, âcause there are just as many zombies on this street as there was out on the Strip. I donât slow. I grab Vivianâs hand and keep goinâ, stayinâ as close to the stores lininâ the sidewalk as I can.
After about fifteen feet, the zombies thin out. I canât hear the screaminâ from the alley no more. Either the bastards have been put outta their misery or weâre too far away. Too bad, âcause that means the zombies here are more interested in us than the ones on the Strip were. And the black gunk on our clothes ainât foolinâ âem.
A few come closer to check us out but lose interest when we keep movinâ. It wonât last, and I know it. Weâre pushinâ our luck beinâ out in the open like this.
A rotten showgirl grabs my shirt as weâre passinâ by, and my heart goes into double time. The bitch opens her mouth and screams in my face while she tries to pull me closer. Vivian stifles a scream behind me. I move my body so itâs blockinâ her, then jam my knife into the showgirlâs skull. She drops to the ground, and it draws even more of the ugly bastards our way. There ainât as many âround as there was on the Strip, but theyâre all suddenly very interested in us.
We gotta move.
âRun!â I yell to the others.
I tighten my grip on Vivianâs hand and take off. The zombies are everywhere. My heart pounds in tune with her heavy breathinâ. After a few steps, she pulls her hand outta mine and starts hackinâ away at the zombies. It makes me sweat. After the last few days, I donât ever wanna let go of her.
We cut our way down the street, takinâ out anything that gets in front of us. I forget about Jon and Megan. Even though I feel bad for the girl, I ainât got a lot of respect for Jon. Vivianâs my priority. No matter what else happens, I gotta get her outta this alive. Thatâs all that matters.
We make it to the end of the road without losinâ anybody. Thereâs a small store in front of us with the door wide open, and I duck inside. Hopefully, thereâll be a back way out. We ainât gonna make if we stay on this street.
